The new year is awesome. Although it is a mere calendar change, it feels like a major soft reset to our lives. The enthusiasm on this very first day is enormous that using it right will give the whole year its benefits. Let’s see five unique new year resolutions that can transform you in a good way.
This one is very simple. Year after year, the writing habits of people are diminishing. What we need is consistency in writing. Yes, Diary. Did you know diary writing is a stress buster and also improves concentration?
What if you’re already a diary writer? Well, you may very well try shoulder writing.
Yeah. Most people don’t know about it. Instead of using our weak fingers to write, we can put our strong shoulder muscles to work.
Since the shoulder muscle is very strong, you can write faster for a long period of time. The cherry on the cake is, the writing will look beautiful every single time.
But, if you love to take hard challenges, ambidexterity is definitely for you. Learning to write with the non-dominant hand (usually the left) is a great thing to start this year for sure. You will be on the same list amongst people like Nikola Tesla, Albert Einstein, Mahatma Gandhi, Benjamin Franklin, Da Vinci. I am Practicing it for like a week now after my right arm dislocation and I can see improvements already.
Learning a Language
Learning a new language as a New year resolution is nothing new. I am mentioning it here because it does help your brain a lot and also makes touring easy to those regions. Research says that learning a second language improves brain function and thinking ability. Every time a word represents an object, a neural connection forms inside the brain. Thus, learning a language means giving the brain a nice energy drink. You can learn one of the romantic languages or classical languages like Tamil or Chinese. Practicing a new Accent is equally great. Knowledge is power.
Walk while you talk
Ever since I watched an advertisement by idea telecoms of India, I always walk whenever I talk over a phone. The name of the commercial is ‘walk when you talk’. you can watch it here. During long calls, I end up walking for minutes to hours and thus burning more calories. You can try it too. Might be silly, still, it counts. After all, a little drop makes a mighty ocean.
Listening to music
We all listen to music irrespective of our age. Statistics say that out of hundreds of genres only pop, rock, hip hop and R&B make about 79% of music consumption. Unfortunately, genres like Jazz, classical music makes only 1% each. For a change, why not discover such genres this year? After all, the beautiful timbre and harmonics of acoustic instruments are soul touching. The texture of sound in this kind of music is intoxicating. vocals and lyrics are fabulous. With less compression and less processing, the instruments sing in their full glory.
If you want to be 1 in a million, listen to what those millions do not listen to.
That brings to the 5th one.
Yoga is other secret successful people practice every day. Unlike exercises, yoga connects the body, mind, and soul. The benefits are fitness, motivation, mindfulness, happiness, intelligence, better sleep and what not? You don’t have to do hardcore yoga to reap its benefits. You can do ‘padmasana’, ‘kapalbhati’, ‘tadasana’, ‘savasana’ and meditation to enrich your life. Performing ‘Soorya namaskar’ tones down your body and make your mind blissful. A simple meditation can be a good start. 30 minutes a day will give you significant benefits in a week or two.
Since Yoga is mentioned, I couldn’t resist mentioning Fasting
Simply put, Fasting can be the best thing you give your body. Fasting is a pattern of skipping meals throughout the day and ending it with a dinner after 6 pm. Doing it even once a month is very beneficial that Hindu culture has it integrated into it for over 5000 years now. Research says fasting can purify the body, improve immunity, repair digestive system, increase muscle mass, slow down ageing and even reduce the risk of cancer.
No wonder ancient gurus do fasting regularly. You too can start fasting as the guides are all over the internet. It is easy to do compared to paleo or keto diet. Go try it out.
Each one of the above is very beneficial in the long run. I have done all the above and have seen the benefits first hand.
Whenever I’m stressed and go into severe anxiety/ rumination mode, I take a piece of paper and write things down. Trust me, it relieves a lot. I listen to music or read books before bed and I have a sound sleep. When I was practicing yoga, my life was bliss. waking up at 4:30 am used to be autonomous as my human clock was well functioning. I wish you to take at least the simplest of the above and maintain it for a week or two to notice the difference. All the best.
